When Jesus Knocks: A Call to the Church and the Mission Field

Updated: Jul 20

📖 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” — Revelation 3:20

We often hear Revelation 3:20 in the context of evangelism, shared with those who have never encountered Christ—an invitation for individuals to open their hearts to Jesus for the first time. But when we read the verse in its full biblical context, it becomes clear: Jesus isn't speaking to unbelievers. He's addressing the Church.

Specifically, this verse is directed toward the Church in Laodicea—an affluent, self-assured body of believers who believed they had everything they needed. Yet, in Christ’s eyes, they were “wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.” The irony is heartbreaking. They had material wealth, status, and comfort, but they lacked the very thing that gives life meaning: the abiding presence of Jesus.

This image of Jesus standing outside the door and knocking is both sobering and stirring. He’s not breaking in. He’s not barging down the doors. He’s waiting—patiently, graciously, lovingly—for His own people to welcome Him back into His rightful place at the center of their lives and communities.

That same knock echoes today. And not just for individual believers, but for the global Church.

The Knock at Our Door

As I’ve traveled across nations—from Cuba’s underground Church to South Africa’s creative movements—I’ve seen firsthand how Christ is moving outside the walls of what we often call “ministry.” He is in the streets, in the slums, in the places where faith doesn’t wear polish and praise doesn’t need a stage.

But I’ve also seen Churches in the Western world—and even among global leaders—where we’ve allowed busyness, programs, and performance to crowd out intimacy with Jesus. We’ve stopped listening for the knock. We’ve assumed His presence when we’ve actually left Him out.

That’s why Ruach Global Missions exists.

A Response, Not a Program

Ruach Global isn’t just another missions initiative. It’s a response to the knock. It’s a movement birthed out of prayer and presence—raising up and sending out young adults, particularly from communities of color, who are burning with love for Jesus and boldness for the nations.

We believe Jesus is calling the Church back to the foundations: prayer, worship, evangelism, and discipleship. We’re not waiting for opportunities to show up—we’re building Houses of Prayer, training intercessors and missionaries, and sending them to the frontlines where the Gospel is needed most.

Every time we say “yes” to going—whether across the street or across the ocean—we are opening the door to Jesus. We are saying: “Come in. Take over. Lead us again.”

More Than a Verse

Revelation 3:20 is more than poetic imagery. It’s a warning. And an invitation.

Will we continue doing Church as usual? Or will we open the door, not just to Jesus as Savior, but to Jesus as Lord—of our lives, our Churches, and our mission?

At Ruach Global, we are choosing to open the door. Not just in theory, but in action. We are choosing to listen for His knock, to hear His voice, and to respond with lives laid down for His glory.

Are you ready to open the door?

Visit The Well Encounter – Ruach Global to learn more about how you can join the movement. Whether through giving, going, or praying, there is a place for you in what God is doing through this mission.

Let’s not be a Church that keeps Jesus waiting. Let’s be a people who hear the knock—and answer.
